New Summer Wave of MermaidCore

By Charlotte Ross

Micro trends are constantly flooding our feed on social media. This summer one hot trend has been showing up even more: Mermaidcore.  It is common for these popular media based trends to die out quickly and not make it to the runways;however, for Mermaidcore that is not the case. This trend has been hinted at for the past couple years but has gotten extra recognition this summer. Mermaidcore features blue tones, sequins, metallic accents, and shells that give a beachy mermaid look.  The live action The Little Mermaid has brought even more popularity to this style as some of the countries favorite celebrities walk down red carpets all decked out in the newest style obsession.

The idea of mermaid core was first shown in 2021 at Versace’s spring/summer collection.  Gowns with starfish and shells walked down the runway.  Since then emerging designers such as Síedrés and Bahía María have done similarly.  Looks that could be described as Mermaidcore also came from Spring 2022 to this Spring 2023 by Blumarine.

Blumarine Spring 2023 collection used sea foam greens and blues as well as long sheer gowns replicating waves. The models looked straight out the ocean with slight beach waves that were messy but definitely fit the aesthetic.  Brognano said that the collection was based off The Little Mermaid as that was a favorite cartoon of his growing up and it was shown clearly throughout the collection.

Wanna follow this wave?  Try cooler tones and silver accents or jewelry and leave your hair natural to let it wave freely.  Use fun accessories like shell necklaces, purses, and earrings too.  Soon you’ll be looking like the true setter of this trend, Aquamarine.
