HBD to the “LBD”

By Charlotte Ross

August 19th is what would be the 140th birthday of fashion icon, Coco Chanel.  Coco Chanel was founder of Chanel, creator of perfume Chanel No.5, and face of chic fashion.  Along with her many innovations of the time, a specific one Chanel is today known for is the “LBD”, aka the little black dress.  The “LBD” is still looked at as a staple in feminine fashion as its classy ways work for many occasions. The little black dress started in the 1920’s and while it may seem plain, there had never been a more perfect example of simple class before it.

Unfortunately I can’t say all good about the influential Ms Chanel.  Coco’s non fashion related beliefs must be acknowledged as it is never supported at Criminal;however, just like with any example of expression we must separate the art from the artist as she still made major changes and advances in the fashion industry, despite her appalling side of antisemitism.  While you enjoy this post keep in mind that what's being appreciated is her advancements in fashion not her beliefs and hate.

Now how should one nail the “LBD” in a way Coco would approve of?Choose your LBD as what fits best on you no matter the length, and then follow these tips to look straight out of Breakfast at Tiffanys.

1.Pearls-Coco was the true costume jewelry fake pearl icon and nothing is classier than channeling Audrey Hepburn.

2.A heel-Keep it short enough to strut in but high enough to lengthen you and make your little black dress look even shorter without taking away the class.

3.An updo- You can’t worry about humidity if your hair is up.  Experiment with a french twist or a slick bun.

4. A charm bracelet- What is more dainty and unique to you?

What else can we thank Coco for?

1.Tweed- A classic staple in womens business fashion.  A favorite of mine still today.

2.Two Tone Shoes- Perfect in both the iconic Chanel slingback heel or controversial ballet flat.

3.Chanel No.5- Why not smell like both Marilyn Monroe as well as Celine Dion? Thanks Coco

4.Pearls-To pair with the “LBD” you’ll be sporting…Or literally anything else too.

6. Flip bags-Is this what you think of when you picture a Chanel bag? I for sure do and it will remain timeless.
