Sports Influence on Fashion
By Charlotte Ross
It’s no lie that fashion is everywhere, both on and off the court. With the Summer Olympics in one of the world's fashion capitals, Paris, sports influence on fashion is stronger than ever in 2024.
“Tenniscore”
While tennis has always been one of the chicest sports, tennis-inspired fashion is making a major comeback this summer. Tennis skirts, polos, headbands, and white put together outfits are being turned into everyday styles instead of only being known as athleisure. This resurgence is patially due to Zendaya’s press tour style for the Challengers film. Following the film’s release, brands like Sporty & Rich, Tory Sport, Nike, and Lacoste have regained popularity. Anthropologie has also opened a Tennis based collection, they’re considering their “Tennis Shop”.
The Olympics
Fabulous looks were shown in Paris before the Olympic games even started. Opening ceremony performers, Céline Dion and Lady Gaga, arrived in Paris wearing outfits by French designers, such as Celine and Dior. Both artists wowed the audience with their amazing performances and breathtaking looks. Céline Dion performed in a Dior haute couture gown that took 1,000 hours to hand-make, featuring 1,640 feet of beaded fringe. Also in head-to-toe Dior, Lady Gaga performed in an all-black piece and feathered headband with extravagant pink feather props surrounding her.
Olympic Uniforms
Style has always been present at the Olympics; however, the team’s uniforms stand out this year like never before. Team USA is sporting a 14-piece custom collection by Ralph Lauren. The collection includes a patriotic touch of the States’ colors and uses inspiration from Paris, the host city. In addition to Ralph Lauren, Team USA also used Speedo for the swimming athletes, and Nike for some of the other athletes. Team Canada’s uniforms are by Lululemon, Team Haiti’s are by Stella Jean, and the Team Republic of Ireland’s were designed by Laura Webber. Designing Olympic uniforms gives more recognition to the brand on an international platform while promoting the importance of including cultural heritage into fashion.
